Forgive? But theft was the one unforgivable sin, the common denominator of all sins. When you kill a man, you steal a life. You steal his wife’s right to a husband, rob his children of a father. When you tell a lie, you steal someone’s right to the truth. When you cheat, you steal the right to fairness. There is no act more wretched than stealing. Hadn’t Baba sat me on his lap and said those words to me? Then how could he just forgive Hassan? And if Baba could forgive that, then why couldn’t he forgive me for not being the son he’d always wanted? Why –

Amir decides that “One of us had to go.” Why ⇒  Amir thinks that if Hassan is out of his life and no longer has to see him, then it will help shrink the guilt he feels.

Hassan says that he did steal the watch. Why ⇒ Hassan always did anything that Amir wanted because of how loyal he is. He said this because he knew if he said he didn’t steal it then they would know Amir was lying and he would be in trouble. So he does this for Amir, as he knows that Baba and Ali will believe him.

Amir says “Then I understood: This was Hassan’s final sacrifice for me.” Explain ⇒ When Hassan would sacrifice himself for Amir – it was when their servant to master relationship shone through. Amir knows this as he give up his chance of a better life living on Baba and Amirs land.

Why was Baba so upset that he cried? Explain ⇒ Baba had grown up with Ali and they had known each other for nearly 40 years. He considers both him and Hassan family and wants to look after them. He loved Hassan and treated him like a son. Before this he had also forgiven Hassan for ‘stealing’ the watch.
